Peeved About Parasites......and Doctors

Ah...the joy of Friday.

The joy of getting a message from the GI doctor on Friday, when it's too late to do anything about the great news that Victoria, still, still has Giardia. Apparently, the first dose of medicine did not rid her off her freeloading enemy.

What really burns my cookies, is that I called the doctor two weeks ago and politely suggested that we should treat Victoria again for her pesky parasite because she still has the scariest poop I have ever seen.

Did the doctor listen to me? Of course not. Instead, I had to take three more poop samples, which I turned in a week ago.

Did I get timely results from the doctor? I did not! I had to call and be pesky myself until they finally called me at 4:30 this afternoon. Too late to get Victoria the medicine to kill the nasty little creatures. Since she is so small, the medicine has to be compounded and those pharmacies aren't open on the weekend.

Giardia causes Abdominal pain, Diarrhea, bloating, headaches, loss of appetite and the inability for the host to absorb nutrients. The perfect friend for a tiny child who suffered from malnutrition.

Geez, my cats can get better treatment at the vet.

I am so mad!!!! Maybe I will file a complaint. Maybe I'll file the complaint by calling the doctor at 5 am on Sunday.

  1. You have every right to be ticked...peeved...downright mad! But I do have to point out one thing...Thank YOU LORD that you have an answer to her gastro issues! Its something that CAN be treated and at some point she WILL be free of these pests!

Now, If you'll just give me the appropriate info I'll lodge a 5 a.m. protest with you! But then again that means I have to be up at 5 am to lodge said protest...umm...lets rethink this strategy!

  5. I must say this is an issue that I am praying we don't have when our five get home! Praying for you all. I don't know why so many medical professionals have to be so hard to deal with. :(

  6. Maybe you need a new doctor (entire practice really since the doctor's not usually the one who calls with lab results) - there's really bad ones and really great ones and ones who just can't get their act together. Everywhere we've moved we've had to shop around a lot to find a practice that listens to our parents' intuition/observations and finds our children's health as urgent a matter as we do. Good luck!
By the way, you might try calling more pharmacists. We live in a small college town and found one that was open on a Sat at 6pm to compound medicine when our son was 5 weeks old and his acid reflux was so bad he'd completely stopped nursing. Of course a GOOD pediatrician should know if there is one that will do it!
Really hoping you have only normal poop to deal with soon, especially for Victoria's sake.

  7. I go by the lab myself and sign a waiver and pick up all of any of our lab tests...so I have them often before the doctor will call. I hate how some offices deal with lab results and have been doing this for years out of a similiar frustration with one. I also let them know I do this...I also know giardia is not always a quick response for the test. They have to wait longer to diagnosis it. I have waited a week to two one time...I hate parasites. We have had many to deal with and some of my children even shared them with others here :) including me. We just got over with H Pyloria in Andrew after 1 and a half yrs, 4 endoscope studies ( that is the best way to diagnosis that one- I hate this one even more.Prayers that this time will be the last.

  8. Ugh. I've had giardia and it's horrible. So sorry your doc hasn't been more responsive. When my daughter was smaller and was ending up in the ER twice a month because of croup, I started paging the on-call pediatrician every time we went in. Before long, we were offered the option to keep steroids at home so we could treat her ourselves.

    Hang in there!

  9. Oh, come on! What is the matter with doctors? I'm sorry little princess Victoria. Your mama is going to take care of those pesky parasites! You're a great mom my friend. Praying for you all!

  10. Amen to that! They should at least know that this is not going to fly. I would tell the Dr. Our dr. WANTS to know when we are not happy with the service we are getting from the office staff. He is under the impression that his people are doing what they are supposed to do and when they aren't he talks to them. Over the years we have seen several things get "fixed" pretty quickly. Your Dr may not know that they are not following through with his orders.
